Confronted by bandits rounding up men for slavery, finding refuge in the Ark, a religious community that makes bizarre demands on those they shelter, Franklin and Margaret find their wariness of each other replaced by deep trust and an intimacy neither one has ever experienced before. Tentatively, the two join forces and make their way through the ruins of old America. Inside he finds Margaret, a woman with a deadly infection and confined to the Pesthouse to sweat out her fever. In the woods near his temporary refuge, Franklin comes upon an isolated stone building. Across the country, families have packed up their belongings to travel eastward toward the one hope left: passage on a ship to Europe.įranklin Lopez and his brother, Jackson, are only days away from the ocean when Franklin, nearly crippled by an inflamed knee, is forced to stop. Farmlands lie fallow and the soil is contaminated by toxins. Once the safest, most prosperous place on earth, the United States is now a lawless, scantly populated wasteland. In The Pesthouse he imagines an America of the future where a man and a woman trek across a devastated and dangerous landscape, finding strength in each other and an unexpected love. Jim Crace is a writer of spectacular originality and a command of language that moves a reader effortlessly into the world of his imagination. This was the start of a journey neither of them would ever forget with a roller coaster ride of drama, grief, heartbreak, joy and love that changed their lives forever.įinding Gobi is the ultimate story of hope, of resilience and of friendship, proving once again, that dogs really are ‘man’s best friend. A geologist from the University of California conducted tests examining the surface of the statue with a high-powered microscope. Becchina provided a bevy of documentation of the statue’s recent history, nothing how, where, and when it was excavated. The statue seemed to be consistent with other known kouroi, and its style resembled a kouros at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens – meaning it had a counterpart that came from a particular time and place. The Getty took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation in attempt to authenticate it. However the one Becchina brought forward was in almost perfect condition.īecchina’s asking price for the kouros was $10 million. No more than 200 are left in existence, and most of these are in bad condition or have been retrieved in bits and pieces from archeological sites. Instead of living one day over and over, try living 25 years over each time. Both the movie and the book are about reliving the past but that’s where the similarities end. According to what I’ve read, this book was the inspiration for the movie. Groundhog’s Day was a fun movie where the character wakes up to the same day…day after day after day. This was my third time through the book and I was so moved that I wanted to write a fan letter to the author. The book also demonstrates how fleeting life is and that each moment should be savored to its fullest. Would you end up the same person? What would you do differently? What could you do now to change your future? These are all wonderful topics that the book explores. Imagine if you could live your life over again. I have not gotten anything less than rave reviews from those that have read it. I have lent the book out to no fewer than 10 friends. I have two hard cover copies one for my library and a second that I use as a loaner. Replay has been my favorite book for the past 10 years. I am glad to see that it is finally available.
